Uaymitun 2012-Blog Post #4 “A Day in Merida!”

We bid fond farewell to Val & George, Rog & Sandy and our home away from home in Uaymitun and headed into Merida to drop our car off at the Fiesta Americana Merida.

Armed with frequent reviews of Google Maps and my trusty Garmin GPS, we bravely drove into Merida. All was well, until my GPS said go straight and my Google Maps said turn left… onto a street which didn’t allow a left turn! Arrgh! As we were struggling to determine what to do next, a lady in a van pulled up beside us to see if we were having troubles. I told her we were heading to the Fiesta Americana and lo and behold she went out of her way and led us to the hotel! What a relief!

We caught a cab over the Hotel del Pelegrino and checked into our room.

Here’s the view of the inner courtyard.

And here’s a view of the expansive room we had. We had to shoo out 6 backpackers first! 🙂

As we walked around the Grand Plaza, there were great views of the Merida Cathedral.

The Merida Cathedral was built in the late 1500’s from the Mayan buildings that they dismantled.

The interior of the Merida Cathedral wasn’t overly ornate, but it was certainly immense. A peaceful oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the plaza.

Next morning, an early cab ride with a quick return when the cabby was told I had left my jacket in the hotel lobby and ontime flights got us home by supper time on Sunday evening. Although we did have an 1-1/2 hour wait to get through immigration in the Houston airport!

What a wonderful time we had with all the Western clan!

Bonus Nachos!

Uaymitun 2012-Blog Post #3 “Hacienda Sotuta de Peon”

On Wednesday, we went down to Hacienda Sotuto de Peon… had a wonderful time visiting the Sisal portion of the hacienda and the cenote too.

The hacienda was very interesting and one could imagine how it would have been to live there. This first view is down the central hallway.

Would love to enjoy the view on this porch with some sour orange margaritas

Showing how the fibres were separated by hand!

A happy little hacienda donkey with bougainvillea flowering overhead

Nothing but 1st Class travel for us!

A view of the first cenote… only looking… no swimming… was very warm inside!

Finally… into the swimming cenote… Fabuloso!

Everyone into the pool!

Dining at the restaurant… conchinita pibil (pulled pork), lamb tostados, chicken cebules and more… Yumm!

Just about to have BBQ’d basa fish with achitoe paste for supper…

Uaymitun 2012-Blog Post #2 “A Slice of Life in Uaymitun”

So, now it’s Thursday… 2 days left and here’s my 2nd blog entry… been a rough few days!

Hint of the Day: Thursday nights are Rib Nights at Bamboo Beach in Chicxulub… make a reservation!

Another Hint of the Day: You can refill your water jugs in Chicxulub.

Just another view of paradise from the deck!

Nate demonstrating his hammock skills!

Appies at Henequene’s on the beach by the Malecon! Cheers!

After dinner… strolling on the Malecon!

Another day… more cervezas at Henequene’s

Downtown Chicxulub with the pier in the distance.

Happy people on the pier!

Rib night at the Bamboo Beach in Chicxulub. Yum means Yes in Mayan and in the case of the ribs at the Bamboo Beach it means Yumm!

Will try to force myself to put out another post from our trip to the Hacienda at Sotuta de Peon before we head for home!

Cheers!

Uaymitun 2012-Blog Post #1 “What a difference a day makes!”

It’s hard to imagine, but it’s taken a week of doing nothing to get the energy to start a little Uaymitun blog. It’ll not be comprenshive in pictures, but just a couple to tweak the memories. It will have some lessons learned and tips & tricks for the next visit.

Hint of the Day: looking for lighter fluid for the BBQ, ask for “Gas morado” or purple gas.

It’s true… what a difference a day makes! After a very mild winter, the day before we left to Uaymitun, we got 6″ of snow with 50 km/hr winds in Sarnia.

After our Sunday travel day… Bill and I are making Corona commercials!

While the rental website called our place “Casa Cucos”, it’s real name is “Chuhuc Ha”, which is Mayan for Sweet Water.

The entrance from the highway!

The Bougainvillea was beautiful!

I’ll blog some more when the mood strikes!
